Cutter and Tailor forum?

Hello,
As you can see in the comments recently, many of us are wondering what has happened with the Cutter and Tailor forum. It just stopped being accessible last week and attempting to access it results in an Internal Server error message.
Some of you with whom I have interacted with there have emailed me through the blog to ask if I knew anything about this.

I am sorry to say that I don't know what is going on. I have been unable to contact Sator -  the owner of the forum. I have been in touch with one of the moderators, SG, and he seemed to be as surprised as we all have been about the sudden changes. He also does not have the means to contact Sator, so here we are.

I sincerely hope that the site has not been shut down intentionally. I would have liked the chance to help support its existence, if money for hosting was an issue. I found the information to be quite informative, and the knowledge within quite useful. I also enjoyed the connection with other like minded people pros and amateurs alike.

I know there were discussions recently amongst the professionals who did post, about what the purpose of the site was, and what it should be. I believe the purpose of the forum was to facilitate communication amongst professional tailors, but strangely,  many professionals were members but never contributed.
I am not sure why that is, maybe people are too busy or too unwilling to share their processes, the field is quite guarded after all.
Many thought that too many amateurs were trying to access information and assistance with processes far beyond their knowledge or capabilities, and yes that did happen, but on the other hand, you cannot expect otherwise in a public forum.

Myself, I am at the point in my experience that I don't need stacks of information to do my job, but I like having it around. I like to see other ways of construction past and present and I enjoy learning.

The bigger concern in my mind,  is for the up and coming people interested in the field. I know a lot of what was on the site is available if you google hard enough, but the site was an invaluable resource  of accumulated materials all in one place.
I miss it.

I have contact with a few members from the site, and if I do hear any news I will post it here. Likewise if you know what is going on please let me know.

  1. No luck yet but I know the domain name is still registered. The server is in the US, something common from 6 or 7 years ago because bandwidth from AU was slow. I used to run a site in the UK and still have a couple in the US.

The WHOIS details do not list a contact for Sator as the name is protected by the registrar so I have no got any further yet.

    1. hutch,

Good for you. Let us know if you learn anything.

      Terri,

      Thanks for posting.

I certainly hope the site isn't gone.

  2. I miss it too. I've been too shy to contribute, but always refer to the collective wisdom of the forum when I'm working on a tailored piece.

  3. It's a real shame. Only the webmaster can fix a server-side error, so if Sator doesn't do it, no one will. He left it running with no-one behind the wheel for quite some time, because he is busy elsewhere.

Obviously I wasn't privy to the pro discussions, but they must have realised that the site's original concept had stalled long ago? 'Amateur' discussion was keeping it ticking over.

Anyway that's all been combed over many times. I await hopefully good news.

  5. I haven't found out anything either. I've been in touch with cperry and Schneiderfrei. I emailed Martin Stall, a moderator, but never heard back.

    1. I received an email from Martin, who had discussed it with another member. He doesn't know anything either. Such a mystery.

  6. It may be time to gather people together and start another forum. Perhaps a freebie job for the time being. I hope C&T returns, but Sator seems to have moved on.

    1. Considering the great care he has taken with the forum over the years it's hard for me to believe that he'd shut it down without a word. He'a very good writer; I'd think he'd want to leave an interesting valedictory message or at least a diatribe about how we all drove him crazy. :-)

      I hope he's all right.

    2. I think perhaps it's a matter of being busy elsewhere and not even noticing that the server end has a problem, rather than it having been shut down.

    3. I don't want to litter Terri's blog with comments, which is why I suggested a temporary gathering place.

    4. It would be great to have a temporary meeting place online! I don't mind being the conduit for a while though.
Its hard to believe that Sator has managed to keep himself hidden ie no one a tually has the means of connecting to him, other than through various forums. I too find it hard to believe that he would just let it go in this manner. Hopefully something will be resolved.
Btw i wont have access to internet from Friday noon til sunday evening, so I won,t be able to publish any comments until sunday evening.
      Stay in touch!

  7. Hi Terri, and all. I have set up a Facebook page so as to try and keep everyone together until we figure out what to do and, not to crowd Terri's blog. I have emailed the forum developer but no reply from them yet. Here's the link. https://www.facebook.com/cutterandtailor

  8. I have just installed a bare forum so that people can comment on the situation with the disappearance of the CutterAndTailor forum.

  9. Hello All.

I have not been able to access the forum either. I have been sick again and have not been online as much as I would like. I hope that it will be available again soon! Best wishes to all.

  10. Hello All, Does anyone have a draft of a smoking jacket from cutter & Tailor? I thought there was one in Chaudry's book, but cannot seem to locate this reference now!

Thank you for any help with this.

    1. Look in Patternmaking for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph Armstrong. There are instructions for 4 different types of pants drafts.
